We have recently attended a semi-annual Telecom Expense Management Industry Association (TEMIA) meeting on March 23rd-25th in Orlando, Florida. TEMIA is a group made up of the major TEM providers that includes 39 member companies that meet to set industry standards, share best practices, and network with other members. ISI’s President, Mark Friedman, and TEM Director, Michelle Forney, attended to learn more about the direction of the industry, and present a concept to the TEM providers that would bridge the gap between TEM and Business Analytics: which organizations need to gain visibility into consumption management of unified communication efforts.

The overarching theme emerging from this TEMIA meeting was a noticeable increase in cloud app usage from mobile devices and the consequent need to optimize expense, as well as usage, of apps in the enterprise.

Notably, organizations average more than 500 cloud apps in use, of which almost 90% aren’t enterprise-ready, and only 10%, like Concur, Salesforce and Office 365, are sanctioned via IT channels. For those 90% of unsanctioned apps, some like WebEx, Go To Meeting, and Citrix are business led, but more than one-fifth turn out to be user led, such as Facebook, YouTube, Gmail and more.

These unsanctioned apps could be costly to the enterprise. After all, more than one-third of all cloud data leakage policy violations occur on mobile devices.

Keep in mind, for every upload to cloud software development apps there are three downloads, and more than one-fifth of data uploaded to cloud business intelligence apps have terms that designate the app vendor the owner of the data.

A TEM provider can help an organization optimize cloud spend in five steps:

  1. Discovery of apps running in your enterprise.
  2. Analysis of apps spending (noting redundancies).
  3. Indicate where to consolidate apps when possible.
  4. Demonstrate proper app usage/get IT sanctions.
  5. Support the enterprise’s ongoing governance of app usage.

While at the event, Friedman presented, “Expanding the Scope of TEM Engagements”, suggesting that TEM providers look into focused solutions such as Business Analytics to better determine and manage consumption for their customers, as well as to differentiate their services in the TEM marketplace. Emphasizing the benefits of combining PBX/VOIP call detail records with TEM to consolidate reporting and provide a unified communications landscape—with voice, video, IM and conferencing—was also a cornerstone of the discussion.

Forney ran for and was elected as a member-at-large to TEMIA’s executive board. Board meetings are held monthly to set the tone for member meetings, identify improvements to TEM, WEM and MDM solutions, and determine the overall direction of the organization.
