It’s Time for a Change: Microsoft Lync to Become Skype For Business

Posted by on

When Microsoft first launched Lync in 2010, many were skeptic of how the system could impact the telecom world. Needless to say, all naysayers have since been silenced. So what does the future hold for Microsoft Lync? First, a name change.

That’s right. Microsoft recently announced that Microsoft Lync will henceforth be known as “Skype for Business”. This change comes as no surprise, as Skype has become a universal symbol of togetherness.

Integrating the Skype system with the Microsoft system in name and body demonstrates the bringing together of the familiar user experience of Skype, with the enterprise security, compliance, and control from Lync.

Starting in the first half of 2015, Lync will officially become Skype for Business, and have a new client experience, new server release, and updates to the service in Office 365. Among the updates will be the adoption of Skype icons for calling, adding video, and ending a call.

There will also be call monitoring from Skype, which keeps an active call visible in a small window, even when a user moves focus to another application. Users will also be able to transfer a call with a single click, instead of the usual three. Lync already offers instant messaging and audio calling with Skype users. However, Skype for Business adds video calling, as well as the Skype user directory. This makes it possible to call any Skype user on any device.

This update will provide a robust solution set for users. Thankfully, those familiar with call accounting & reporting, conversation recording, workforce management, and speech analytics will find these communication management solutions still compatible with the new Microsoft platform.

The key is to take advantage of these new capabilities with a solution provider who knows the Microsoft landscape, and can offer a way to increase productivity, ensure compliance, and enhance agent coaching.
